OK, after my questions of a few days ago, I stopped into the local hobby shop to look at stuff, just to see what they had in the way of pre-fabricated miniatures.
So, Roger, you said bigger is not better, and small is good. So how small is acceptable? Because, I look around and find that for HO scale model train dioramas, there are a TON of unpainted but very well detailed buildings and autos that can be had fairly reasonably.
HO scale is 1/87 scale, which is WAY smaller than I ever envisioned using, but the assortment and craftsmanship of products is really tempting, assuming you can find good artists and painters to do all the detail and whatever. (That shouldn't be that hard. Put up a sign in the lobey "MODEL PAINTERS WANTED FOR WORK ON FEATURE LENGTH FILM" and you should get some response...)
So is that scale too small?

Actually, the bigger you can make your miniature, the better. However, 1/12 scale is typically what most effects guys use because of the multitude of doll house furniture and the such that is available. It all depends on how close you are going to get. I think the houses you are talking about would work but you would need to stop way down. Better make sure you have a sunny day!
